Lately (after practicing all my piano scales and exercises) I've been sight-reading songs out of my family's Hymnal.
As I'm flipping through the pages, I realize I barely know any of the songs. Maybe I glimpse a few familiar titles, such as Amazing Grace or Be Thou My Vision, but all the rest I have never heard in my life.
After realizing this - I decided to try to learn a new hymn every day. Each song holds a different way of glorifing God. Some are a poetic description of his majestic glory, others are a humble plea for His help, while several are songs overflowing with thanks.
Each and every one has it's own unique character.
It's sad, really, how the majority of Christians today neglect most of these hymns. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the praise music written by Phil Wickham, Brandon Heath, Amy Grant, ect. . . I just think too often people overlook classic hymns because they get in mind they are "old fashioned," or "nobody listens to them any more."
Well, I don't know about you, but that doesn't seem like a good enough reason to ignore these hymns written to glorify and praise our one true Savior.
Still, still with Thee,
When purple morning breaketh,
When the bird waketh and the shadows flee;
Fairer than morning,
Lovelier than the daylight,
Dawns the sweet consciousness. . .
I am with Thee!
